Because of the way it cleans, Genesis 950 breaks down and removes everything from dirt and dust, to slimy residue left behind from other carpet cleaning solutions. Most carpet cleaning solutions are soap based cleaners.Genesis 950 is not. Because it is not soap based it works better than other carpet cleaning solutions. Acting as a surfactant, Genesis 950 uses water to make stains water soluble. When used to clean carpet, it is able to remove the smallest stain particles from fibers and padding.

Soap based cleaners can leave a residue behind. This residue is often a fine film which can give your carpet a slimy feeling. Over time, this film can leave carpet feeling stiff. The more you try to rinse soap out of the carpet, the more it foams and in turn the worse the residue. Soaps are also designed to attract dirt. This attraction means that once soaps are introduced to carpet, dirt, dust, dander and other debris will likely be drawn to it.

MACHINE CLEANING CARPET

Bissell Pro Heat

Carpet cleaning is easier now than ever. These machines are affordable and easy to use. One of the most popular models is the Bissell Pro Heat. Upright carpet cleaning machines such as this typically have 3 compartments. One compartment holds clean water, one holds solution and the third compartment is for dirty, returned water. Settings of these machines make carpet cleaning easy. There is no need to mix the solution and water as the machine does so automatically based on your setting. For General cleaning, use the "Low" setting. When selected, the machine will siphon a minimal amount of cleaning solution in proportion to the amount of water being used. Likewise, if the "High" setting is used, the machine will siphon a higher volume of solution the tank. This setting gives you the power to use what is needed for the job. Typically the "Low" setting would be best used for a general cleaning, while the "High" setting should be used for heavy traffic areas or pet stains.

Once you have cleaned the entire carpet based on your setting, allow the carpet to sit for some time. This will give the solution the time needed to break down debris and stains in the carpet. For a general cleaning, letting the carpet sit for about 30 - 45 minutes will be enough. In cases where stains are overwhelming, allow the solution to sit for a couple hours. The longer it sits, the more it can break down. 

After the time has elapsed, fill your machine's tank with clean water and nothing else. Select the "Rinse" cycle and slowly go over the areas you have applied the solution. In rinsing, you will see the return water come back black. Rinse thoroughly until the return water begins to come back clear. This may require several rinsing cycles. If the water does not come back clear, rinse until you are satisfied with the appearance.

Bissell 2 In 1

Another design for carpet cleaning machines is a 2 in 1 tank. The Bissell Powerlift is an excellent machine with this type of design. Typically, most carpet cleaning machines that can be rented have this design as well. A 2 in 1 tank holds both the clean water and the solution. This tank gives you more control over how much solution you use. Simply fill the tank up based on your cleaning needs. For a general cleaning use 1/7 Genesis 950 and 6/7 water. For moderate cleaning, use 1/3 Genesis 950 to 2/3 water. In extreme cases, use a 50/50 mix. However be sure that you never use more Genesis 950 than water when cleaning. Water is the active ingredient. If the amount of 950 is greater than the amount of water, your results will be minimized. 

Once the tank is filled, begin to clean the carpet. Allow this mixture to sit in the carpet for about 30 - 40 minutes to properly break down stains, odors, bacteria, dirt and dust. After that time has elapsed, fill the tank with ONLY clean water. Go over the entire area slowly to rinse and flush out stains that have been broken down. If you see your return water coming back black, you might want to rinse multiple times until the water begins to come back clear.

With everyday life, there are going to be spills and stains. You certainly do not want to be using a carpet cleaning machine every time there is a spill or stain. Genesis 950 makes spot cleaning these accidents easy. Keep a spray bottle handy for these spills. The best ratio for the spray bottles is 1/3 Genesis 950 to 2/3 water. This will be more than enough to clean counters and appliances in the kitchen and bathroom, but it is also a high enough ratio to deal with food spills, drink spills, pet stains, ink stains, makeup spills and whatever else gets thrown at you.

Using Genesis 950 as a spot cleaner makes removing stains easy. Simply grab your spray bottle and saturate the stained are. In this example, water stained patio furniture is being treated.

Once the stain has been saturated, allow the mixture to sit for a few moments. 

After the solution has been absorbed by the stain, wipe it away.

Give the surface a rinsing with a damp cloth and allow to dry.

As an all purpose cleaner, Genesis 950 works a little different that traditional cleaners. Genesis 950 does not contain the harsh chemicals found in most cleaners. Such cleaners rely on the chemicals to create a reaction with the stain in hopes of breaking it down. Not Genesis 950!

Genesis 950 is a surfactant. This type of cleaning relies on water. Genesis 950 is sold in concentrate form. It needs to be mixed with water to become active. Once Genesis 950 and water are introduced to a stained area, the 950 works to make the stain water soluble. Once water soluble, the stain looses it's adherence and breaks away from the surface. At that point, it can be rinsed away.

Being concentrated, you save money. If Genesis 950 is used as a general cleaning solution, it can be mixed as low as 1 part 950 to 7 parts water. This essentially turns 1 gallon of concentrate into 7 gallons of cleaning solution. of course there may be instances where you want to increase the ratio. Typically, we recommend filling a spray bottle with 1/3 950 and 2/3 water. This is the best ratio to have on hand. It allows for general cleaning and more moderate stains and spills. If you do have 2 spray bottles, fill one with each of the different ratios so you have a cleaner for the basics and a more advanced cleaner for tougher stains.

General Cleaning

Genesis 950 can be used throughout the house. Clean kitchens and bathrooms with ease. For general cleaning, spray your mixture of Genesis 950 and water onto the stained area. Give it a few minutes to soak into the stain. Once it has soaked into the stain, you will be able to wipe the stain up. Typically, Genesis 950 will allow you to wipe away things you normally have to scrub. In some cases, if the stain is extremely difficult, you may need a second application, or an increase in the amount of 950 in your solution.

Use Genesis 950 throughout your kitchen. On stove tops, you will be amazed at how easily Genesis 950 breaks down grease splatters, food spills and burnt areas. Simply spray the stains, give it a few minutes, then wipe them away with a damp sponge.

The Problem With DIY Pet Stain Recipes

VINEGAR - Nearly every DIY pet stain remover recipe calls for vinegar. Vinegar is a natural cleaner because of it's acidic properties. It is inexpensive, and it is commonly found in homes. However vinegar has an acidic base. Pet urine has an acidic base. Pets urinate based on where they smell they have gone before. because the acidic properties of urine and vinegar are similar, they have similar scents. Cats and dogs are not able to distinguish the two apart. because of this, if they smell vinegar in the carpet, they will think it is urine, and continue to go in that spot. So if your pet keeps going in the same spot, even though you cleaned it with vinegar, you now know why! DO NOT use vinegar to clean pet stains. 

BAKING SODA - Baking soda is included because of it's ability to neutralize odors. However neutralizing odor and removing it are two different things. When you have pet odor, you don't want it to just be covered up. You want it gone. Baking soda will not do this. Another thing baking soda can't do is remove odor from the padding. Treating pet stains with baking soda may only minimize stains on the surface. It can not get into the padding. If you somehow were able to get it into the carpet padding, it would clog the pores to the carpet and damage your carpet cleaning machines. Even in powder form you run the risk of blowing out your vacuum engine. As the tiny particles are pulled into the machine, they can clog the filter. If you have ever had a vacuum burnout, think back to whether you had used any powder based cleaners. If you use a carpet cleaning machine, baking soda becomes paste like. This will in turn damage your machine as well. 

SOAPS - Soap based cleaners include laundry detergent and dish washing soap that are used in some DIY carpet cleaning recipes. Soap should never be used in carpet. Period! Soap works through a process where it attracts dirt. The purpose of soap is to bring the dirt and dust, or in this case pet stains to a central point. However in carpet, as the soap based cleaner moves downward, it brings that stain with it. Eventually, soap gets in the padding. Have you ever had a stain seem to go away but then come back some time later? Reflect on what you used to clean it. It was most likely a soap based cleaner. As humidity changes, all that collected dirt moves upward and your stain is back. Unfortunately many brands of carpet cleaning solution are also soap based. You may also find a resin or slime like film on your carpet fibers. Genesis 950 can actually break the soap residue down and remove that from the carpet as well.

Naturally, our favorite cleaning product is Genesis 950. Nothing cleans like it. It's an all purpose cleaner that removes the toughest stains. As a surfactant based cleaner, it works with water to get into the stain, break it's bonds and lift it to the surface. A green cleaner, it is safe for your home, your family and your pets. There are no harsh chemicals like bleach or ammonia. Being a surfactant, it is free of soaps, which provides a deeper clean. In addition to cleaning, it kills germs and bacteria, deodorizing the areas it cleans. Genesis 950 is by far the best stain remover and all purpose cleaner available.


There are several other cleaning products we do love though too! Genesis 950 is an amazing cleaner. When used in a carpet cleaning machine, the results are astounding. Our favorite steam cleaner is the Bissell Pro Heat 2X. The machine is extremely easy to use. It has the general shape and feel of an upright vacuum cleaner. What we really like about this machine is the ease of the compartments. There is a compartment for fresh water, a compartment for cleaning solution, and a compartment for returned water. The compartment for solution sits in the back of the machine and detaches for easy fill up. When placed in the machine, you can control how much solution is used for your cleaning by changing the setting of the machine. It allows you

to choose various settings such as rinse, low, medium or heavy. This makes the machine very easy to use because you do not have to pre-mix the solution and water. The machine does it for you.While the heavy setting is most beneficial for heavy traffic and pet stains, it does drain the solution from the compartment fairly quickly. In instances where a general cleaning is being performed on carpet, the low or medium setting will maximize your cleaning solution. When cleaning, the machine has soft bristles that rub the solution into the carpet. It also has a plastic lip which makes extracting excess water in the carpet easy. The return water tank is large, so it holds a lot of water and you do not need to empty it every time you run through the fresh water. Despite being large, the return water tank is very easy to remove and empty. It locks in place, and detaches easy with a handle for easy carrying. Once you have cleaned your carpet, it is important to rinse. The Bissell Pro Heat allows you to use the machine on a rinse cycle, only releasing fresh water. This allows you to properly rinse the carpet after it has been cleaned. The machine's return water tank is clear. This is a nice feature because it allows you to see what is being removed from the carpet. You can easily continue the rinse cycle until the water starts returning clear. With this, you can really tell when the carpet is actually clean. An added bonus to this machine are the attachments. The attachments allow you to clean upholstery, drapes or small isolated stains. We have tried this machine using several cleaners. None of those cleaners had the impact of Genesis 950. While a machine in itself can be beneficial, it is essentially what you use in the machine that makes a difference.

When cleaning the bathroom, one of the best things to use is the Scotch-Brite Easy Cleaning Pad. The Pad is made by 3M, so immediately you know there is quality there. While the pad compliments itself as being a sponge you can use without any other cleaning products, we use it with Genesis 950. When Genesis 950 is mixed 1 part 950 to 7 parts water, and then sprayed on a surface, it breaks down the stains and lifts them from the surface. This makes cleaning the bathtub, toilet, sinks and stove tops a breeze. Naturally, once broken down, the stain needs to be wiped off. This is where the Scotch-Easy Cleaning Pad comes in. The sponge has 2 sides. One side is textured, and the other like that of a traditional sponge. Generally, Genesis 950 will break down things you normally have to scrub to remove. If the buildup of the stain was too heavy that it did not all break down, the textured side of the Scotch-Brite pad gives you that extra bit of friction to scrub off whatever you are cleaning without damaging the surface. Once the stain is ready to be lifted, simply flip the pad and wipe it down with the sponge side. Brilliant! While we do love this sponge for it's duality, our only complaint is that the textured side can deteriorate quickly if over saturated or bent repeatedly.

Gloves come in handy when cleaning. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, you do not want your skin touching some of the chemicals in cleaning products. Many cleaners have damaging properties. Genesis 950 does not have anything that will damage skin, but some people prefer to wear gloves because of how Genesis 950 works. Being a surfactant cleaner, it can draw the oil from your skin, promoting dryness. Gloves however are not needed. Another reason gloves come in handy is based on what is being cleaned. Naturally if you are cleaning a toilet, or bathroom area, you do not want to be touching dirty surfaces. Gloves

serve as a barrier. There are many types of gloves available. Our favorite are the Playtex Living Glove. These gloves are far superior then any other. They have a nice tight fit over the fingers. The portion that covers the forearm is unlike any other glove. This portion of the glove is long. These gloves run well past your forearm, and cover a lot. In addition to being long, they have another unique quality. They are not tight, yet at the same time, because of the latex, they do not slide down. They stay in place and there is not a constant need to push them down. They also have enough room that if you are wearing a long sleeve shirt, you don't have to roll your sleeves up. You can actually fit the glove over the shirt! If you have an overhead cleaning project, or are reaching upwards, the gloves allow for you to roll them up at the arm end. This will catch any running or dripping water, rather then have that water run down the length of your arm. Another positive feature of these gloves are the textured ridges to the fingers. You can hold things without them sliding through your fingers. The textured fingers also allow you to scrub anything that might not be coming off while cleaning. Finally, these gloves last a loooooonnnnnnnnnngggggggg time.

Here is an example of a stain that was treated with a very common store brought product that claims it is specifically designed to remove carpet stains.

Rather then removing the stain, the cleaner actually made a bigger mess. Store bought cleaners can have a negative effect on your carpet for several reasons. If a cleaning product is soap based, it can actually attract dirt to the area where it was used. If a cleaning product is chemical based, it can discolor your carpet. In this photo, a soap based cleaner basically just spread the stain throughout the carpet. Prior to the attempted cleaning, this was just a simple, small stain. After cleaning with a basic cleaner, which claims to be specifically for carpet stain removal, the stain now appears to be smudge marks throughout the carpet.

One small spot can be frustrating, but when there are several stains, a carpet cleaned improperly can be an embarrassing nightmare. In the event that a carpet cleaner doesn't work, stains become the least of your worries. In the above example, an attempt was made to clean several stains. This photo represents months of trying to remove carpet stains using several different household cleaners. It is more then obvious that these cleaners failed miserably. Prior to cleaning, some of these stains were only visible if you approached the stains up close. After cleaning, they became eye sores. Cleaner after cleaner failed. The next step was replacing the carpet.

How To Make Your Carpets Look Professionally Cleaned

It turned out that cleaning this carpet and removing the stains was easier then ever . . . once it was done correctly. The key to properly removing stains from the carpet was in the cleaner. The best type of cleaner to use is a water based surfactant. A surfactant cleaner works quite differently from other cleaners. It does not contain harsh chemicals or soaps found in many cleaners labelled as spot or carpet cleaners. Those type of cleaners promote buildup in carpet, or can cause reactions with previously used cleaners, or even with your carpet for that matter. Enzyme based cleaners can also be highly ineffective. The biggest problem with enzymes is that they are bacteria based. Because of this, they will only break down components with a specific composition. They react to other elements, and if the elements do not correspond, the enzyme will not break down what you are looking to remove. Vinegar and ammonia are often suggested, however if you have pets this is an absolute No No as pets can be drawn to urinate in the places where they were applied.

Surfactant based cleaners do not contain harsh chemicals. There is no bleach. There is no ammonia or vinegar. There are no enzymes. Instead, the cleaner breaks down the bonds of the stain, causing it to detach from the surface. It can then be flushed from the area it was located in.

The best way to clean a carpet, and the way that was done in the above example, was with a carpet cleaning machine. The machine used was a Bissel Pro Heat. The actual process to clean these stained areas took less then an hour. It was quite simple. The Bissell Pro Heat 2X has a compartment that fills with water, and another that fills with cleaning solution. In this case Genesis 950. The machine allows the user to set the level of cleaning needed. Obviously, based on the stains, the setting was "Heavy". Slowly, go over the stained areas releasing the mixture of solution and water into the carpet. After the area has been cleaned, the next step is to rinse. As the surfactant based cleaner has been released into the carpet, it immediately begins to break down the dirt, grime, and other residue in the carpet. Once the area is finished, use only water, and the rinse setting on the machine. Go over the area that was cleaned and begin flushing all the lifted debris from the carpet.

For this particular carpet, the rinse cycle took the longest. Upon rinsing, the water being returned to the machine was mud brown. It was shocking to see what was coming out of the carpet. It should have been expected based on how the surface looked, but we often forget that the dirt, dust and grime settle down into the carpet. This carpet needed to be rinsed about 7 to 8 times before the water being returned was clean. However the end results speak for them selves. The carpet was no longer a filthy eyesore. It was clean, smelled fresh, and was even restored to a fluffy state.
